Reclaiming Vision by Toril Johannessen and Marjolijn Dijkman / Interview

The following text is a conversation about Liquid Properties, a project in two parts: a nature fiction film entitled Reclaiming Vision and the installation of glass sculptures at the site of the outdoor screening, containing water samples taken from along the Oslo Fjord. The conversation between Marjolijn Dijkman (Brussels), Toril Johannessen (Tromsø) and Karolin Tampere (Lofoten) took place on Skype in late June 2018.

The ocean is the beginning of all life. In time some creatures learned to live on land, and a few, like the whale and the seal, found their way back to the sea. Eventually man, too, found his way back to the sea, not to return to it physically but rather to re-enter it mentally and imaginatively.

The stone was here

before my birth, before

the birth of my father

and his father, my grandfather

and ten generations preceding,

and all the living beings

that people this planet

until this closing moment.

 

I can only kneel,

venerate the moisture

growing stronger as I sniff

its odor: a chunk of forest,

that ancient moisture

emanating from caves

sunken deep in time.

 

We will depart

                         and the stone

will remain in the plaza, erect,

atop the pile of its own bones

which do not crumble

with haste

                  unlike our

body parts.

 

Consistence of the world:

regard the mute corrosion

of flesh, so unlike the solidity

of millennia-laden textures; look,

the wasting envelopment,

the brittle bones sustaining

a tattered coat;

the stem which we ultimately are,

unlike the quarry or basalt

chilled by the alchemy of centuries.

 

Man is not older than stone,

nor does he reach as far

                                       or outlive

what he has erected with his living pulse.

Klimaforkjemperne utgjør vår tids motstandsbevegelse.

Klimaforverringene er ikke et temaområde, men en altomfattende fysisk, mental og sosial virkelighet. Dette må syns i språket vi fører. Sorgen over utryddelsen av fugler, pattedyr, insekter, planter og mennesker er reell og kan uttrykkes av flere.

Miljøbevisste mennesker kjemper i praksis for omsorgens solidaritet og må derfor søke sannhet i ord og gjerning. I vår tid innebærer det også å ta i tu med middelklassens vegring mot å erfare negative følelser når farene truer. Snakk sant om virkeligheten i enhver sammenheng, er min bønn.

Å sette (antropo)scenen selv: Klimakrise, teknologi og møter med naturen

Kan forestillingen om chthulucen, en verden der ulike arter og individer griper inn i hverandres historier, være kilden til en annen etikk?

Kråkebollen ligger i en firkantet skål, i det som i laboratoriet kalles en bakke. Toppen av skallet er skåret av. Men føttene fins fortsatt. Føttene er fortsatt i bevegelse og kråkebollen forflytter seg, inn i et hjørne av bakken. Lengst mulig vekk fra mennesket med skalpellen og pirkenålene.
– Se! Den lider! Den er redd!
– Ikke vær dum! Kråkebollen kan ikke lide. Den har jo ikke sentralnervesystem.
Likevel blir dette et møte. Likevel gjør møtet noe med dem som deltar.

Flatbread Society

Soil Procession : A MOVEMENT of Soil from the Country to the City by Farmers.

Temporary Public Intervention connected to permanent, public artwork, 2015
Oslo, Norway.

On June 13, 2015 a procession of farmers carried soil from their farms through the city of Oslo to its new home by the Oslo fjord. Soil Procession was a GROUND BUILDING ceremony that used the soil collected from over 50 Norwegian farms from as far north as Tromsø and as far south as Stokke, to build the foundation of the Flatbread Society Grain Field and a Declaration of Land Use for the commons that included an official naming of the site to Losæter. A procession of soil and people through Oslo drew attention to this historical, symbolic moment of the transition of a piece of land into a permanent stage for art and action related to food production.

Extreme weather in Europe linked to less sea ice and warming in the Barents Sea

The cold, remote Arctic Ocean and its surrounding marginal seas have experienced climate change at a rate not seen at lower latitudes. Warming air, land and sea temperatures, and large declines in seasonal Arctic sea ice cover are all symptoms of the changing Arctic climate. Although these changes are occurring in relatively remote locations, there is growing evidence to link Arctic sea ice retreat to increasingly erratic weather patterns over the northern hemisphere.

As sea ice declines, areas of open water increase, allowing the ocean to lose more heat to the atmosphere. Heat lost from the ocean to the atmosphere reduces the atmospheric pressure which provides more energy to storms and increases their cloud content through evaporation.
